So… NLP is a great foundation

NLP is an attitude and a methodology, providing a variety of models, theories and processes to increase behavioural flexibility and personal effectiveness.  The study and application of NLP enhances communication skills and hence improve personal and business relationships.

For Self – NLP can help improve your self awareness.  Imagine being able to take control of your life and the direction it takes you.  How often do you respond to situations without even thinking, only to be disappointed with the results?  Increasing your understanding of the strategies that work for you and learning from those that don’t is an essential ingredient for personal effectiveness and self esteem.  Identifying your core values and motivational drivers will help you to define outcomes.  Exploring self management techniques will enable you to access a wealth of personal resources to manage yourself during ambiguous times, increasing your resilience and enabling you to achieve success.

In Business – NLP is a holistic methodology, creating a well formed vision and strategy is a good starting point and NLP supports this systemic approach.  Understanding language patterns will support you in negotiating ethically for win win results, thus operating with integrity, maintaining stakeholder relationships and securing future business.  Awareness of verbal and non verbal structures will also contribute to protecting you from less than ecological business transactions.  Recognising motivational drivers and communication preferences within your teams will support employee engagement and retention.  Using NLP within your coaching conversations will enable you to pinpoint how, where and when to support your employees to maximise their potential and thus drive business results.

With Others – NLP provides a number of keys to unlock the structure underpinning communication.  Through recognising patterns in language and behaviour (both within ourselves and others) we can ensure we communicate with transparency, thus creating rapportful relationships, with shared outcomes.  Adopting the core attitudes of NLP will nurture curiosity and openness to explore possibilities, challenging ideas not individuals, seeking solutions not obstacles, developing behavioural flexibility and creating rather than limiting choices.  If, as NLP suggests, we truly respond to our internal representations of the world we are experiencing then our perception is our reality.  Opening our minds to the fact that there could be any number of realities co-existing at any one time dependent on “the experiencer” creates a wealth of options relating to how we might choose to think of and respond to others

We are Deliberate in our Flexibility

Since human beings are complex, here at Going Coastal we prefer to explore patterns of thought and behaviour without the limitations of one specific theoretical model. Whilst we love NLP, we are options-led facilitators and through continually expanding our coaching toolkit we find that we can choose the approach that best suits the individual and situation we are working with.

A surfboard is fairly unhelpful if wishing to explore the bed of the ocean, whilst full diving gear would seem fairly cumbersome if sitting on a coastpath bench watching the swell.

Let’s use a metaphor and think for a moment of our potential as “the ocean”, imagining we would like to explore this space.

We might opt to sit on a clifftop and take an external view, marvel at its vastness and feel guided and enabled to assess and analyse the undulation and patterns of the waves from a secure distance.

We might opt to identify the qualities of the ocean, taking a structured approach to measure temperature, chemical composition, pollution, marine life etc. Truly studying this environment, discovering the relational qualities within it, how the estuaries we create impact upon our very nature and questioning how our actions can positively impact a future healthy ecosystem.

We may like to experience the system, surfing, sailing, canoeing, playful in our recognition of the impact of our emotions upon our motivation and energy.  increasing our awareness of external forces and how we can meander and navigate even the most turbulent of situations.

Or perhaps we will immerse ourselves fully, diving in to the depths to discover new resources, reflective and questioning, seeking unexplored territory and noticing how new insights can alter our approach to previous limitations.

Our stance on the law of requisite variety – in an environment of high variability, flexibility increases the potential of positive outcomes.

There are so many more options too… and yet each requires different approach and different kit.

Happily our work is defined – “enabling you to experience ecological and positive outcomes”.

We have choices in where our expedition takes us, equipped and safe in the knowledge that discovery and progress are inevitable for those skilled, prepared and flexible.

Demystifying the label APP:

Applied – Practical action orientated.  Working with real issues and situations aiming for tangible outcomes.

Positive – Progressive and outcome orientated.  Coaching is not therapy and we take the stance “nobody is broken in need of fixing”.

Psychology – Science of character.  Using a range of researched and evidenced models including cognitive theories and behaviourist techniques in service of humanistic aims which address the relevance of social psychology.

Enabling individuals relate positively with themselves and their world.

Three examples of the many APPs we incorporate within our coaching and training follow, they are described in their simplest and broadest terms to give a sense of each:

Transactional Analysis

Are you creating ripples or waves?

Essentially TA explores the games we play and often the descriptors used within TA resonate well for those within teams or taking a leadership role. The term transaction highlights an interconnection between ourselves and others externally or between our internal thoughts and our actions.

We might explore ego state tendencies or personal drivers and how these assist or limit you in certain situations, thus allowing you to minimise conflict and increase collaboration.

It might be that the scripts you play yourself are out-dated or unhelpful and through changing these your energy and motivation increase.

Maybe your intention differs from the impact of your actions, creating drama and an imbalance between passiveness and aggression and you simply want things to be ok.

Assessing patterns through a number of TA frameworks enables a greater transparency in our communication.

Through guided activities you can begin to rewrite the rule book and ensure fair play.  We start with understanding and recognising your role in the game and how through changing your patterns, the wider transaction adjusts to benefit all.

EI / EQ

Emotional potential (otherwise known as emotional intelligence EI) is innate – most of us are lucky enough to be born with the ability to sense and remember emotions and to process and learn from emotions.

Emotional efficacy (often assessed through emotional quotient measures EQ) relates to our developed abilities to notice, understand, use and respond to these within ourselves and others.

Welcome to the “affective domain” – be sure to recognise, regulate and respond with elegance.

The terms EI and EQ are regularly used interchangeably, essentially EI /EQ is interested in not only do we “understand” and can “”describe” emotions, more-over are we using emotional information and developing our innate potential to improve communication with ourselves and others?

Since EQ has significant variability, some measurement tools have been strongly challenged as predictors for performance, yet since we know that results rely on far more that cognitive intellect, it is sensible to suggest that through developing the skills associated with Emotional Intelligence we can improve our ability to relate and inter-relate with ease.

Self Awareness, Self Regulation, Self Motivation, Social Awareness, Social Skills

We tend to explore 5 dimensions of emotional competence, which when blended with deeper APP models can be useful for leveraging EI and therefore improving work and home relationships.  Through self and peer feedback we can explore and develop 25 factors relating to how a person perceives emotions in themselves and others, and manages emotional states in order to communicate more effectively.

Our EI development offer is integrated into broader personal and leadership development coaching and courses rather than being introduced as an entity in and of itself.

Symbolic Modelling with Clean Language

Symbolic modelling is the act of abstracting reality into metaphor to enable a more creative approach to exploring a situation.  The use of metaphor can also provide a safe foundation to discuss analyse and interpret events with a degree of objectivity.  In addition as skilled coaches we can carry out symbolic modelling exercises without verbalised content.  So we might not ever be required to know the full details of the client’s topic of exploration.

Clean language uses a range of questions to reduce “stuckness”.  These are aimed at moving between global, specific and abstract in order to access less conscious processing within our brain.  Since the questions at times create ambiguity, the logical / rational part of the mind is required to allow greater creativity to emerge and this in turn shifts perspective.

From time to time even the most high performing individuals experience blockages in progress and clean language is excellent for creating traction to move forwards. Our approach is both playful and provocative and this allows clients to reduce the censoring of their thoughts, allowing them to cut through to the questions and answers that make the biggest difference for their progress.
